In the Tampa photography business, women are becoming more and more empowered behind the camera. But it’s not just in Tampa Bay. Across the United States, in all areas of business, women have become a powerful force. Today, more than 11 million businesses are owned by women in the US. Among those numbers, women of color make up the ownership of 5.4 million businesses, and women-owned businesses make up 39% of all privately held companies.
That means lots of women are getting started with businesses today, and others are struggling to get by in the era of COVID-19. But no matter where your business stands in terms of planning and profitability, its technology aiding the success of women-owned businesses. Here are some important technological solutions that empower women business owners:
Why I started a photography studio
When I started my photography studio, I realized quickly that I just wasn’t happy working for other people. I had jobs and I hated them. I felt like a square peg in a round hole. Too loud, too in your face, too opinionated, too assertive for the corporate world’s expectations of women. That’s why I branched out and did something that allowed me to be both creative and technical.
Photography is a subject that is heavily correlated with technology. After all, the first cameras, camera obscuras, were used to further science by allowing for the study of a solar eclipse without damaging the natural eye. Today, photographic technology allows me to act on my values. Those values include uplifting women in business with lifestyle and branding photography that elevates their businesses to new levels and offering women feel-good services that improve their self-esteem and offer intrinsic value.
Technology for women-owned businesses
Whether we like it or not, in society today women often bare the brunt of managing multiple responsibilities, both in and out of the home. These technology advancements help propel women in business:
eCommerce
eCommerce allows women the flexibility to be a retail enterprise with the click of a button. eCommerce platforms, like Shopify and Etsy, make it easier to get products in front of consumers than it has ever been. For women who are looking for a career working from home, the advent of accessible, easy-to-use eCommerce tools makes it a better time than ever for women to start their own company.
Microservices
In an enterprise business world that values the flexibility and scalability to DevOps and lean practices, being able to offer microservices or start a microenterprise is a solution for some women who are starting with less capital than a larger enterprise. Microservices are individual services a larger enterprise purchases to ensure their company functions as it should. Basically, microservices companies perform outsourced services for a single part of a larger business. These microservices companies are often only run by one or two people, and for women with limited resources, they are far more accessible than other types of businesses.
Mobile Tech
What would we do without our phones? While we may sometimes want to hurl them out of the window of a moving car, the impact mobile technology has had on small business is immeasurable. And women-owned businesses have benefited from mobility. Having a smart device lets women have their business in the palm of their hands, wherever those hands may be. With mobile flexibility, women can be anywhere they need to be and still call the shots for their business.
