It’s almost 2021 and there’s a lot to look forward to. America is approaching a new era. Hopefully, we can put the COVID-19 pandemic in our rearview soon, as the American science industry plows through vaccine trials and edges closer to having not one, but two, vaccines available to mass consumers.
That said, 2020 has taught us so many things.
And there’s a lingering sense that we should get out and do something. As a photographer, I’m used to being spontaneous, but this is a little different. You have to stop and think about where you should start. It’s not enough to get excited and act, you need a plan.
Here’s how to get through 2021 as an involved citizen, making a difference in your community:
How can I make a difference?
Are you a business owner wondering how you can make a difference? If so, you aren’t alone. So many of us are wondering how we can help make small meaningful changes in the world around us. Here’s what you can do to help:
Think about what you have to offer
First, consider what skills you can offer that would be the best fit for a cause. Can you speak publicly about the organization? Offer free press or copywriting? Are you good at tutoring foreign language students, or organizing groups? Wherever your skills and passions lie, decide what you are ready to share with the world.
For example, I’m a Tampa photography business, and personally, I’m inspired by strong women in politics. One way for me to get involved is to offer my services to my favorite political campaigns.
Research local causes
Educate yourself on what causes are important to your local area and how you can best use your skills to help them. Maybe you are a marketer who is handy with PR and you can offer those services to help your local foster care agency promote a fundraising event. Perhaps you are a certified yoga instructor who can teach classes to veterans at an old folks home.
Connect with non-profits
When you’ve decided where your skills can make the biggest difference in your area, you can start to connect with non-profits that support your values. By pitching yourself to non-profits you not only get to help others, but you expand your network.
Offer to volunteer your skills
Once you’ve reached out to the non-profits on your list and exchanged a few emails, decide where you’d like to volunteer your skills. Don’t overdo it. It feels good to give back but you can’t always help everyone all at once, you’ve got to take time for you.
Give your time
Once you’ve decided where to volunteer give your time. It’s valuable and in short supply so it’s important you take the right steps when deciding on an organization to offer help to.
