From drunken pirates to Tom Brady joining the Buccaneers here are the best moments of 2020 for people in Tampa Bay:
Remembering Tampa’s best moments in 2020
If you’ve been following my blog, you know what I think about 2020! But even though it’s been a bit of a dumpster fire, we are going to talk about something good today. What were the best moments in Tampa’s recent history? I’m going to isolate some of my favorite moments in 2020 as I hold my breath and wait for 2021:
The Stanley Cup
Tampa had an excellent year in sports ball, or sports-puck, in this case! Tampa Bay Lightning earned their second Stanley Cup win and the first one since 2004. We are still a long way away from catching up to Montreal Canadiens, who have won the Stanley Cup 24 times since 1915. But not a shabby moment for the Sunshine State in winter sports, which is why it tops this list.
Tom Brady
While the Tampa Bay Lightning have long been a source of pride for the Tampa Bay area. The Bucs have worked their way up from being a source of shame. Tampa’s record of successful NFL performances is a dark spot in our sport’s history. Tampa Bay had its super bowl win under Gruden when he took Tony Dungee’s team to the event in 2003, and their track record since makes that seem like a fluke, which is why everyone was surprised when Tom Brady transferred to Tampa Bay.
Brady says, “ “I love playing with the guys that I play with, the coaches, the whole organization has been unbelievable.” Although, this quote came at a time when Brady was trying to explain three consecutive home losses. Nonetheless, the moment Floridians found out Brady was moving to the Bucs was a big one for 2020.
MLB Wins
Business people love the Rays! And the Rays love business people! The Annual Suite packages are a great investment for any business that wants to be able impress clients with wining and dining. And the Tampa Bay Rays had a great season, making it all the way to the playoffs before losing to the Dodgers in game 6. A memorable run!
Black Restaurant Week
Despite COVID, while following social distancing standards, Florida participated in its inaugural Black Restaurant Week, promoting Black-owned dining establishments. During a time when restaurants are suffering, Floridians are joining in unity to acknowledge the cultural significance Black folks have on the food industry.
Gasparilla Pirate Festival
Do you remember January 2020? Before we knew what we now know about COVID? Before Florida voters worried about whether or not to stand in line to vote and argued the validity of mask protection?
It seems like it was forever ago, a different time even when we were all dressing up as pirates to drink green beer in January. But if you attended Gasparilla you may have a memory that’s hazy at best! The Gasparilla Pirate Festival is a staple event in Tampa that’s happened since 1904. The event commemorates the fantastical stories of pirates in Florida. It kicks off with a parade, and bar crawls, and includes a number of events across the Tampa Bay area, but predominantly in and around South Tampa where the parade draws in visitors each year.
