If you use Instagram, you must be familiar with the Explore page. It’s a wonderful place here curated content comes straight to your device stream. But how does it work? That’s the question.
Much like Google, Instagram is based on a series of algorithms. When it comes to the Exploere page, Instagram’s algorithm tries to understand what you like and what you might be interested in, based on queues from you. For example, what you post or what you like.
Using machine learning and automation, it programs a custom Explore page to match your interests. So, the more you interact with Instagram, the better the tool understands your usage and what you might like to see.
As a small business owner, this information is valuable for getting in front of your target market. After all, social marketing is all about getting to where your customers are, and like a lot of other areas of marketing, to get a beneficial boost from the Instagram algorithm you have to know what your customers like. With that information, here’s how you get a spot on the Explore page:
Post Stories, Reels and IGTV
Stories is Instagram’s answer to SnapChat. Reels is an Instagram version of TikTok, and you guessed it, IGTV covers YouTube. When you use Stories or Reels you get about 15 seconds to impress. IGTV can allow for longer videos, but it’s still a good idea to keep your IG content snappy!
These tools are meant to encourage engagement, and give you new ways to share your content instead of simply just using stills. When you use Reels, Stories and IGTV, you’re more likely to appear on the Explore page of Instagram which gets your brand exposure.
Discuss Topics
Insta is always updating their Explore page. A recent addition, Instagram allows users to find new content using Explore pages organized by topic. Instagram’s algorithm, like the Google algorithm, targets keywords to deliver high quality results to its customers. If you use the right keywords, Instagram may view you as an authority on a specific topic and promote your content on the Explore page! Topics include things like food photos and videos, wellness campaigns and materials.
Promote Shop Listings
If you have a Facebook a shop, a new feature that rolled out allows shopkeepers to promote their listings on Instagram. They can be promoted in the shopping section of the Instagram Explore page depending on the interests of the user.
